Bridging the Gap Between Shelters, Adopters, and Pet Owners

My role

My role

As the UX Designer and Researcher, I led every phase of this project:

  • Conducted user research and interviews.

  • Designed and tested wireframes and prototypes.

  • Crafted user personas, empathy maps, and information architecture.

  • Built a high-fidelity prototype and conducted usability testing.

Context

Growing up in India and volunteering at an animal NGO, I witnessed the struggles of stray animals and the challenges shelters face in connecting them with homes. These personal experiences inspired me to design a solution that simplifies the adoption process, supports pet owners, and strengthens the relationship between people and animals.

Millions of animals reside in shelters, longing for love and belonging. Simultaneously, countless individuals seek the perfect companion but are held back by a fragmented adoption ecosystem. Buddy bridges this gap with a user-friendly platform connecting shelters, adopters, pet owners, and pet care providers. The app ensures seamless adoption, informed pet ownership, and an enriched experience for everyone involved in a pet’s journey.

Problem

Millions of animals remain in shelters each year, while potential adopters face barriers like disorganized processes, lack of guidance, and difficulty finding compatible pets. Pet owners, too, often struggle to access reliable care and resources, leaving the ecosystem disconnected.

Solution

Buddy provides an intuitive platform where adopters find their perfect match, shelters gain visibility, and pet owners access resources like training, walkers, and vet care. The app fosters a holistic pet ecosystem built on connection and trust.

Understanding the Problem

The project began with thorough research to grasp the complexities of the pet adoption ecosystem.

Through an extensive review of articles, reports, and online resources about pet adoption, shelter operations, and pet ownership challenges, I identified key issues:

1

Adoption Barriers: Over 6.5 million pets enter shelters annually, yet only about half find homes, often due to inefficient matching processes.

2

Owner Struggles: 62% of new pet owners feel overwhelmed due to insufficient support post-adoption.

3

Resource Accessibility: Finding reliable pet care services (walkers, trainers, sitters) is a common pain point for 70% of pet owners.

4

Shelter Challenges: Limited visibility and fundraising hinder many shelters, with 40% relying on community donations alone.

We conducted a online survey with 43 participants and interviews with 3 Potential adopters, 2 Pet owners and 2 NGO workers

67%

of potential adopters find the current adoption process disorganized or unclear

70 %

of participants said they would adopt/foster if they had clearer guidance and resources.

72 %

of pet owners struggle to locate trusted services for pet care

78 %

of shelter workers believe digital platforms could boost visibility and adoption rates.

Breakdown of problems

Disconnected Adoption Process

Limited transparency and inefficient matching methods hinder successful adoptions.

Lack of Support for New Owners

New pet owners often feel overwhelmed and struggle to find reliable resources.

Fragmented Pet Care Services

Finding trustworthy pet care providers can be time-consuming and inconvenient.

@dvdwinden

I've built pretty handy sites powered by Craft or WordPress in the past, but seeing @framer tackle CMS stuff so effortlessly is mind-boggling

Mani

@BeingMani97

The scroll variant in @framer hits differently. Never imaged that making some complex things would be easy with that. Everyday i learn something new with Framer.

Lauren

@waller_texas

Honestly the @framer publish time is insanely fast. Just published 2 weeks of changes in 5 seconds – like it’s almost too fast for such a big moment.

I learned how to build a website in @Framer! My goal was to learn the basic tools in about 20 minutes a day last week. Nothing fancy. No special design. Just random elements that's responsive. If I can do it, so can you!

@pixelbeat

A quick word about @framer. Framer is forever changing the experience of designing for the web. Forget about a design tool. Once you get the basics, friendly & powerful as it is.

I was enjoying @framer a lot but I am BLOWN AWAY by their Figma plug-in. From Auto-layout to flex-box in the browser in seconds; this has completely changed how I'll build.

Manoj

@manojnayak

Websites built on @framer look so beautiful.

I have been in a @framer rabbit hole for the past 6 hours without even noticing as time goes by — its everything I love in Figma combined with everything I love in Webflow. I am in love.

Learned some basics of @framer yesterday, and today I delivered a landing page for a client. It's so unreal how small the learning curve is from Figma to @framer. Absolutely love it.
